Before Your Tile Is Used: Proper Protection
Because cement tiles are naturally porous, protection begins during installation.
Priming & Sealing
After installation and grout curing, tiles should be properly prepared and sealed to help prevent staining and simplify maintenance.
We recommend using products formulated specifically for cement tile surfaces, such as:
- Tile Armor Poseidon Primer - applied prior to sealing to help regulate absorption and create a more even protective layer
- Tile Armor Zeus Sealer - creates a breathable barrier that helps resist moisture, oils, and everyday spills while preserving the natural matte appearance
This preparation step is the single most important factor in long-term performance.
Understanding Sealer Maintenance
Sealers protect the tile, not permanently alter it. Over time, normal use gradually wears this protection.
When to Reseal
- Kitchens and high-traffic floors: every 12–24 months
- Bathrooms and backsplashes: every 2–3 years
- Decorative or low-use areas: as needed
A simple test: if water darkens the surface instead of beading lightly, it is time to reseal.
Everyday Cleaning
Cement tiles prefer gentle cleaning and minimal product buildup.
Recommended Routine
- Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove abrasive dust
- Mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner
- Use soft cloths or microfiber mops
For routine cleaning, a cement-safe cleaner such as Tile Armor Aphrodite’s Daily Tile Cleaner helps lift dirt without stripping protective sealers or affecting pigments.
Avoid overusing soap, which can leave residue and dull the finish.
Deeper Cleaning When Needed
Occasionally, areas exposed to cooking oils, heavy traffic, or outdoor debris may require a stronger clean.
For these situations, a periodic treatment with Tile Armor Athena’s Heavy Duty Tile Cleaner can safely remove buildup while remaining compatible with sealed cement surfaces.
After deep cleaning, always rinse thoroughly and allow the tile to dry completely.
What to Avoid
Spills & Stain Prevention
Cement tiles are durable but benefit from prompt care.
- Wipe spills quickly, especially oils, wine, citrus, or tomato-based foods
- Blot rather than aggressively scrub
- Clean with a neutral cleaner afterward
Proper sealing greatly reduces the likelihood of permanent staining.
Post-Installation Care & Grout Haze
A light film may appear after installation due to grout residue. This is normal.
A cement-safe cleaner designed for delicate mineral surfaces can remove haze without damaging the tile surface. Avoid acid-based grout removers.
Protecting High-Use Areas
Simple habits help preserve your tile:
- Use felt pads under furniture
- Place mats at entrances
- Avoid dragging heavy objects
- Use trays beneath oils, soaps, or cosmetics
Outdoor Applications
Exterior cement tiles require the same sealing process with slightly more frequent maintenance due to sun, rain, and environmental exposure.
Proper drainage and periodic resealing will keep outdoor installations performing beautifully.
Patina & Natural Aging
Over time, cement tiles develop subtle tonal shifts and soft wear patterns. This evolution reflects real use and is part of the material’s character.
Rather than remaining perfectly uniform, cement tiles grow richer and more layered as they age.
